Memorial stone to the establishment of the town Akmene

Akmene region was established in the North of Lithuania on 20-06- 1950. Its area is 843.7 sq.km, in 2001 there were 30221 residents. Naujoji Akmene town is its administration center. Territory of the region is allocated into 6 elderates (Akmene, Kruopiai, Naujoji Akmene town, Naujoji Akmene rural, Papile and Venta). There are 3 towns: Naujoji Akmene (12345 residents), Akmene (3140 residents) and Venta (3412 residents), Papile borough, Kruopiai borough and 167 villages.

Akmene region municipality board consists of 25 members, representing 6 parties. Board decisions are implemented by municipal administration. Voters are especially favourable towards the Lithuanian Union of the National Party, electing larger number of its representatives to the regional board since 1995. Since 1997 A.Lupeika, member the Lithuanian Union of the National Party, is the region mayor.

Akmene is maintaining friendly relationship with German Bocholt town, Polish Konin town and Latvian Dobele region.

The region is crossed by the railway built in 1871

The land is crossed by Siauliai - Mazeikiai railway, laid in 1871, its branch reaches Naujoji Akmene, as well as by Birzai - Mazeikiai oil pipeline; the towns and Papile borough are supplied with natural gas. Naujoji Akmene is 150 km away from Klaipeda port, 120km away from Riga, 60km away from Siauliai and 50km away from Mazeikiai.

This land is rich with large limestone deposits, used to produce cement and building lime. Strong building material industry was created there after the 2nd World War. Communication is convenient, public utility structure is good (there are water, power, heating, gas supply networks); abundant skilled manpower contingent makes this land attractive for investments and opens favourable depelopment opportunities.

Naujoji Akmene

Akmene region is interesting for the travellers and holidaymakers for its natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage. Forests take 31.6 per cent of the territory. Both Lithuanian and foreign scientists are interested in Kamanos marsh state reservation that has been established for its protection. Venta regional park is trying to preserve its most valuable live natural resources and landscapes in the river Venta basin, being the third in Lithuania for its size.
