What concerns religion, community of Akmene region is rather integral: 78 per cent of the residents say they are Roman Catholics. The first church of this land was built in Papile in 1493. There is Akmene Dean‘s office of Telsiai Diocese of Lithuanian Catholic Church in the region, administering Akmene, Kivyliai, Klykoliai, Kruopiai, Naujoji Akmene, Papile, Vegeriai and Venta parishes. After independency was restored, new churches were built in Naujoji Akmene town and Kivyliai village.

Alkiskiai village has Evangelic Lutheran Church, built in 1865. Since 1933 there is an independent Evangelic Lutheran parish.

In the past there lived large Jewish and Russian communities, who had their own churches and primary schools.
