| Akmene land is rieh with large limestone deposits, located near the surfaces and exploited in an open way. Limestone resources calculate 29 billion tones, excluding the undiscovered part. Since 1932 limestone has been extracted in Menciai village and used for lime production. After the 2nd World War in the Northern part of the region large cement plant was built, Naujoji Akmene town was growing near it. "Akmenes cementas" AB yearly manufactures 550-700 thousand tones or top quality cement, meeting EU Standards, supplied to the Lithuanian and foreign markets. Basic raw materials for cement production - limestone and clay - are extracted in Akmene region; 550 persons work in "Akmenes cementas" AB. This is a private capital Company with a part of the shares possessed by international building material concern RMC GROUP. |  | | Public Company Naujasis Kalcitas in Venta produces building lime | Some other companies of this land are related with cement manufacturing. AB "Kalcitas" exploits limestone quarry in Karpenai, clay quarry not far from Papile, "Cemeka" UAB is engaged in cement sales and delivery to the customers in Lithuania and the other Baltic States. "Naujasis kalcitas" AB in 1999 purchased and reconstructed lime burning technology line with rotary kiln in Venta. Since 1997 joint German and Lithuanian venture "Eternit Akmene" has been manufacturing asbestos-free coloured and durable roofing. Traditional business of this land‘s residents is agriculture. |  | | In Akmene Shop of Mazeikiai Dairy of the Public Company Pieno Zvaigzdes curd cheeses of various kinds are produced | More than 53 per cent of the crops include grain, 35 per cent - perennial grass. 420 farms have been registered in the region. Papile Agricultural Company maintains the largest domain, cultivating 4160 ha of land and keeping 2400 cattle, including 900 milch-cows. Milk is bought and processed by "Pieno zvaigzdes" concern branch Company in Dabikine village. Meat production is supplied to the consumers by "Skabeikiu agrofirma" UAB and "Norpa". Traditional business of ceramics is developed by "Karpenu keramika" UAB. "Akmenes duona" UAB supplies the sales network with ecological bread production. There are 575 companies, establishments and organizations in Akmene region. |
