Residents of Akmene land are both users and active creators of cultural values. 75 amateur groups of various genres are working in 10 houses of culture, joining together 920 persons. 560 singers, dancers and musicians from Akmene region participated in the World Lithuanian Feast of Songs 2003. Public library with its 13 branches has 194 thousand books. Broad cultural education furrow is driven by general education and musical schools. The house of culture, built in Naujoji Akmene in 1958, is the largest cultural establishment in the region. There are mixed choir, folk music orchestra "Akmene", brass band, a number of choreographic groups. Akmene, Venta, Papile, Kruopiai, Kairiskiai and other cultural establishments enjoy people with their choreographic, vocal, drama collectives. "Ventukai", folk music orchestra of Venta Musical School, leaded by R.Dievinas, is well- known throughout Lithuania. It had given concerts in Germany, Poland, Italy and Latvia.
Choreographic groups, leaded by A.Pakeltiene, B.Viktoraviciute as well as folk music orchestra, leaded by M.Voronoviene, have received nominations "Aukso Paukste". Melodies of Naujoji Akmene teacher folk group sounds distinctively in the concerts. There are 176 historical and cultural monuments as well as 2 municipal museums in the region. In 1864 S.Daukantas, the famous Lithuanian historian, writer and enlighter, was burried in Papile. In 1930 a monument for S.Daukantas, created by famous sculptor V.Grybas, was built in the town square, in 1986 memorial museum for this historian was opened.
Paragiai village still has a farmstead, where in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century two sisters writers, classics of Lithuanian literature - Sofija Psibiliauskiene and Marija Lastauskiene, who published their works under a joint pen-name Lazdynu Peleda - were living. In 1966 museum of these writers was opened there. Siaudine church and belfry (1775), Klykoliai wooden church (1880) are monuments of architecture.
Ancient mounds - monuments of archaeology in Papile, Viliosiai and Luokava, mountain near Naujoji Akmene remind the ancient times. Akmene land is full of self-educated painters, wood carvers, smiths. Painter Elena Adomaitiene and carver O.Simkiene have been awarded prestigious premiums of |
